PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSE for GRADE 6 TEACHERS in MINNESOTA in WEATHER-RELATED PHENOMENA, STARTS SEPT 12, 2020. There is nothing more thrilling than to be able to correlate phenomena that occur over the course of a single day, such as the formation of dew overnight, with real-time data and/or maps and satellite imagery that can be found on the Internet. Circle of Illumination Science Education invites 6th grade teachers (and those who teach earlier grades who may have interest) in Minnesota who want to start prepping to teach weather with a phenomena-based approach to participate in a hybrid course* that will help you learn how to harness the power of a number of real-time web sites. This will include learning how to access and manipulate data while simultaneously deepening your content mastery of earth and atmospheric science. Phenomena to be covered will include relatively simple phenomena, such as day length and sun angle as well as more complex phenomena such as the formation of dew overnight and the development of poor air quality associated with atmospheric inversions. 10 clock hours/CEUs will be given to those who participate and get a passing grade on all assessments. Assessment questions can be used as the basis of student activities and will lend themselves to distance learning. *Hybrid course will consist of one in-person class to be held either outdoors in a school yard or in an indoor room at a school, such as gymnasium, where social distancing can be maintained. Wearing masks will be required. The remainder of the course will be conducted entirely online, duration of approximately 4 weeks. Instructor willing to travel anywhere in Minnesota for in-person meeting but will require reimbursement of all travel expenses. First in-person class will be held on Sept. 12, 2020, location of school/district to be determined based on registration; others to be held later in the fall TBD)
