Seasonality is a familiar phenomenon associated with our climate. But how many of us really understand what causes it?

Although a lot of attention has been given to changes that occur over the year in day length a second factor is just as important: changes in the height of the sun over the horizon at mid-day. This is referred to as “sun angle”.

In this workbook students and their parents will learn how to calculate sun angle on any given day of the year so they can then track how it changes over the course of an entire year. This new knowledge will not only help them understand this important factor behind our own seasonality but it can then be used to calculate sun angle at other places on Earth to provide insights into world climates.
